The Johnson County Community Foundation formed as an Affiliate of the Arkansas Community Foundation on December 18, 2001, to build philanthropy in Johnson County. To date, 35 permanent endowments have been established, and assets have grown to more than $1.2 million. Grants to local organizations and scholarships during this 6 years total more than $80,000. The JCCF Board is actively working to build charitable assets, award grants to help meet community needs and to assist individuals and groups establish endowed funds.

Rockefeller Mini-Science Grants Awarded in Johnson County

Science teacher Brenda Webb is shown accepting last year's award. Ms. Webb's 2007 grant application was successful funded again in 2007. Community Foundation Board Member Ruth Daniel and Executive Director Melody Reasoner attended the Clarksville School Board Meeting to present Ms. Webb a $500 Rockefeller Mini-science grant for her 8th grade science class at Clarksville Jr. High. This grant will purchase supplies for hand's on activities to construct open and closed parallel and series electrical circuits. Sixth grade science teacher Tammy Vire also received a $500 Rockefeller Science grant so students may participate in heart dissection to learn about living systems.
At the Westside School Board meeting, two $500 grants were awarded to Westside science teacher Trayce Smith for 5th and 6th grade hands-on science activities; and a $500 science award went to Ed Bradley at Westside Upper Elementary School for his 7th grade to participate in dissection experiements.
We encourage all 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science teachers to apply for the $500 Rockefeller Mini-science grants for consumable supplies, which are available each year through the Johnson County Community Foundation. NEW ENDOWMENTS
- The Frank and Georgia DeMuro/Qualls Endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. DeMuro to honor members of the Clarksville Fire and Police Departments and to provide yearly grants. In July 2007, $500 grants were presented to Clarksville Fire and Police Department by Georgia and Frank at a ceremony at the Clarksville City Hall.
- The Douthit-Harris-Patterson Family Endowment and planned gift was established by Tom D. Patterson, Dallax, TX, in memory of and to honor descendants of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Douthit, Mrs. Nellie Hudson Patterson, Lois Douthit, Bruce Harris, Agnes Douthit, Harlan H. Patterson, Robin Douthit Hampton, Rea Patterson, Burrow Kendall, Garnet B. and Lawrence M. Douthit, Howard Thomas Douthit, Kent and Nora Hampton Sams and Marcus D. Wilson Sams. Perpetual grants will provide support general First United Methodist Church needs and for maintenance of the Church organ. Other organizations to benefit are: Hendrix University, Oakland Cemetery, West Mt. Zion Cemetery and Woodland Cemetery.
- The Don and Joan Sevier Family Scholarship Endowment for Arkansas Tech University was established by the Jolie and Blaine Leeds family to honor Jolie's mom and dad. Don coached at ATU, and Joan was a Brown Hall Dorm Mom. Unveiled at Don's birthday party, this scholarship endowment will benefit athletic students at ATU forever!
- The East Mt. Zion and the Lone Pine Cemetery Endowments were established through the E. Mt. Zion Trinity Baptist Church and the Harmony Presbyterian Church by Sirlene Frost Sears and Wendell Sears to provide perpetual care for the cemeteries.
- The Woodland Cemetery Endowment was established by the Woodland Cemetery Association to provide perpetual care for the cemetery.
- Jim Wright Memorial Scholarship Family Endowment was established by Jeanette Wright, Douglas Wright and Porcia Russell in memory of husband and dad Jim Wright, who taught at Scranton and Lamar. The first scholarship will be awarded in Spring 2008 to a Scranton High School graduate.
- The Carol and Archie Yandell Family Scholarship Endowment was established by Carol and Archie Yandell to provide scholarships to graduating seniors and students return to complete their educations. The first scholarship was awarded to Clarksville High School graduate Savannah Carter, education student at the University of the Ozarks.

NEXT GRANT CYCLE: August - September 2008
The Johnson County Community Foundation's seventh grant cycle will begin August 2008. Limited funding of $10,000 will be available; however, grants will generally range from $500 to a miximum of $2,500. DEADLINE TO APPLY: September 2008 Date TBA
ELIGIBILITY: Only city and county municipalities, civic and non-profit organizations and educational facilities will be considered. Applicants must be located in Johnson County, be a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and/or meet charitable standards.
