Nucor Steel - ARCF's 2011 Northeast Arkansas Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation
Nucor-Yamato Steel/Nucor Steel Arkansas was recognized as ARCF's Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation at the Northeast Arkansas Business of the Year awards on Tuesday, October 11 at the ASU Convocation Center.
About Nucor
Nucor-Yamato Steel and Nucor Steel-Arkansas, two steel-manufacturing sister companies based in Mississippi County, have made the education of local students a primary focus for their corporate philanthropy. Nucor’s scholarship program provides $3,000 annual scholarships for children of employees in exchange for each student’s commitment to completing at least 8 hours of community service. In total, the program results in hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships each year.
Nucor is also a founding supporter of the KIPP Delta Charter School recently opened in Blytheville, supporting the startup school with both cash and in kind donations to renovate the school’s facility. Additionally, local students pursuing a community college degree can gain valuable job skills training through Nucor’s Steel Tech internship program. Nucor is also the largest corporate sponsor of the Great River Promise, a program that guarantees every graduate of Mississippi County High School who meets basic eligibility requirements a two-year scholarship to attend Arkansas Northeastern College.
In addition to ongoing support for the United Way, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Heart Association Relay for Life and Lebonhuer Hospital, Nucor also works with 12 long-term strategic community partners – a group of local charities focusing on education and at risk youth – and encourages employees to contribute their time to local nonprofit organizations.
