LITTLE ROCK, ARK (March 1, 2011) – Arkansas Community Foundation announced the availability of two privately funded scholarships for Arkansas students.  One program provides scholarships to students who have battled cancer and another to students whose parent was killed in the line of duty.

The Arkansas Service Memorial Scholarship is available annually for students who have a parent who died in service to their nation, state or community. The awards are funded by income from the Arkansas Service Memorial Fund, an endowment fund created in the mid-80s  largely through the fundraising efforts of Sheffield Nelson.  Since 1984, income from the fund has provided 127 scholarships totaling over $155,000.  Applications received by May 1, 2011, will be given priority.

The Ryan Mondy D.A.S.H. Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to a student whose life has been touched by cancer. Recipients must have battled cancer themselves or must have a sibling who has been diagnosed with cancer. The scholarship was established by Andrea and Christopher Mondy in memory of their son, Ryan, who passed away from a rare form of cancer at the age of seven. The scholarship’s name is an acronym for one of Ryan’s favorite sayings: “Doing Anything Supportive Helps.” Applications must be postmarked by April 15.
