Grants Support Recreation Center in Luxora
Football teams, basketball teams, boxing lessons, computer labs, field trips, fishing derbies – the staff and volunteers of the Charles Strong Recreation Center in Luxora work tirelessly to provide kids with positive extracurricular activities led by strong role models.
“They are so sincerely dedicated,” said Christie White, development chair of the Mississippi County Community Foundation (MCCF) board. “They’re constantly looking for grants. I read about the success of their sports teams in the newspaper all the time. They take children to cultural and historical visits. This program has done so much for the young people.”
This year, MCCF supported the Charles Strong Recreation Center with a grant to fund food and supplies for children who attended the Center’s summer enrichment program. For eight weeks, more than 75 children in Luxora had a safe, engaging place to learn and play while school was out.
The secret to the Center’s success is that whole community gets behind the Center and the children it serves. “They have so many volunteers,” White noted. “They work year round. They make sure children are recognized for their accomplishments in the newspaper.” Luxora may be a small town, but the Charles Strong Recreation Center is a place where kids can have big dreams.
