STATEWIDE—What motivated you to read as a child? A favorite series of books? A compelling character? For thousands of children across Arkansas, the horses of the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation make reading fun and interactive.
Founded in 1999, the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation brings Walter Farley’s Black Stallion book series to life through traveling horse shows. Children get to watch the horses in action, read to them, and take home a copy of Little Black—A Pony, Little Black Goes to the Circus or The Black Stallion.
This spring, the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation will host horse shows in North Little Rock, Jonesboro, Batesville, Springdale, Mountain View, Mountain Home, Rosebud, Fort Smith and Texarkana.
It costs $20 per child to host the horse show and provide hard-cover take-home books for each child. You can help offset the cost of producing the event to help the Black Stallion Literacy Foundation reach even more young readers.
JONESBORO—Weight gain and lack of exercise is a problem for many college students, so Arkansas State University’s Wesley Foundation established a bike riding program to give students a fun and engaging way to stay in shape.
Through the annual Tour de Faith, students travel by bicycle on a mission/ service trip. From May 9 to June 2, students will bike from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Jonesboro, Arkansas, stopping along the way to participate in service projects.
Prior to the trip, students will participate in training exercises to prepare for the 1,100-mile trip.
In the short term, students become more physically fit through training and riding. In the long term, they develop an active lifestyle to take with them through college and beyond.
You can support the Tour de Faith through a $500 donation to support the cost of bicycle repair and maintenance during the trip.
