No. Leadership funds are designed for clients who want to enjoy the excitement of giving now and the benefit of investing for future growth. They are invested in the markets to keep client funds growing, but there’s no limit on the amount that can be granted from the fund to the organizations they choose, as long as the fund balance remains above $50,000 for three years.
For clients who want to support a short-term project or take action quickly on an identified need, the Community Foundation offers action funds. These funds are not invested in the markets, so the entire balance is available to grant to the charity of your client’s choice at any time.
In most cases, $10,000 is the minimum for permanent endowments. For Leadership Funds, the fund balance must remain above $50,000 for three years. There is a $1,000 minimum to establish an Action Fund.
Yes, if they choose a donor advised fund, they may name co-advisors and successor advisors to continue to guide the fund both while you are involved and far into the future. Many donors have annual family meetings to determine the causes that will receive grants from their funds.
